Independent Residency

We offer an independent writing residency option for writers who are at a period in their writing process where dedicated time to delve into a project is more desirable than a collaborative workshop experience. The residency provides self-directed writing time in the mornings, with the option to participate in craft sessions in the afternoons.

Residents will be offered 30-minute mentoring meetings with Visiting Poets/Writers on four mornings during the week, which will aim to guide residents in making progress on their writing projects. Meetings on Monday and Tuesday will focus on devising a work plan for the week, while the meetings on Thursday and Friday will help writers take stock of what they’ve accomplished, and establish a plan for their project’s next phases.

Please note: Juniper will share a Resident’s writing sample and statement of purpose from their application with the two Visiting Poets/Writers assigned to meet with them. Visiting Poets/Writers will not be expected to give feedback or edits on manuscripts in these meetings. They will offer general guidance and writerly advice to assist the residents in making the most of their independent residency.

The cost of the residency for 2026 is $1,300* plus optional housing. Applicants for the independent writing residency will receive admission decision notifications beginning in early March.

Juniper Alumni who have attended a weeklong workshop in the past can apply for the Alumni Residency Scholarship. This is currently the only funding available for the residency, although we hope to secure more funding in the future!
